In this day and age of advanced technology, information is shared through multiple internet platforms. There is a lot of money to be made by performing illegal acts through the internet. In fact, internet crimes have run rampant as people are attempting to gain access to people’s information that is stored on the world wide web. There are many different types of internet crimes; however, some people are not aware of how their personal data is at risk. It is important that the public is aware of these white collar crimes, so they can better protect themselves and avoid becoming victims.

One type of internet crime involves blackmail or extortion. Hackers may steal information that could ruin another person’s reputation and then threaten to leak that information. Hacking information itself is considered an internet crime. This occurs when people get into stored electronic information with the purpose to destroy it, sell it or use it for personal gain. People may post products for sale through online websites only to fail to deliver the product once it is purchased. Wire fraud occurs when a person obtains property and then fails to wire the money or otherwise pay for the property.

Child pornography, online prostitution, copyright infringement, sports betting, drug trafficking and electronic harassment are all internet crimes that carry fines and potential jail time. Not only does the internet bring convenience and allows people to access a wide-range of information, it also sets people up to become victims of potential crimes.
