Sex offenses are taken very seriously in Missouri. The recent outcome of a case involving a famous singer shows that the rest of the country doesn’t take these types of crimes lightly either. R. Kelly was recently found guilty of sex trafficking, which is one of the worst sex-related offenses.

What were the charges against the singer?

Famous R&B singer R. Kelly was accused of numerous sex offenses over the course of 25 years. He recently faced a trial that lasted several weeks and faced charges that included sex trafficking, sexual exploitation of a child, racketeering, and bribery.

As the case went on, the jury decided that Kelly was guilty. There were 14 charges against him for racketeering, but he was found guilty of 12 of them. Other serious charges involved sex offenses against numerous victims, including the singer Aaliyah, who tragically died in a plane crash in 2001. It was determined that Kelly obtained fraudulent paperwork to illegally marry Aaliyah when she was only 15 years old. The marriage certificate stated that she was 18. The marriage was short-lived and ended in an annulment only a few months after the wedding.

A still-living victim claimed that Kelly held her against her will, drugged and raped her. Another victim of sex offenses stated that she was glad for the guilty verdict.

What other charges are coming?

In addition to the sex trafficking and racketeering charges, Kelly faces additional sex charges, including child pornography. He will also face charges of obstruction of justice in a separate federal trial. Some of the child pornography accusations date back to 2008 when he was acquitted.

The singer also has additional charges of aggravated criminal abuse and engaging in prostitution. These are more recent sex offenses brought about after Kelly was indicted in early 2019.

While many people accused of sex offenses may be guilty, others are often innocent. These charges are very serious and can dramatically change a person’s life.
