In an effort to curb the trafficking of illegal drugs across state lines, federal authorities typically levy harsh punishments against individuals who are involved in so-called drug rings. In October, the FBI arrested one alleged drug kingpin in California and charged the person with directing and organizing at least three different methamphetamine conspiracies. The first group was in California, and the other groups were within northern Oklahoma and southwestern Missouri.

Investigation of the alleged drug ring

The kingpin from California has a 13-count federal indictment connected to drug charges. There were nine other arrests in the federal drug ring investigation. Another was in California, and two more were in Oklahoma. The other six people arrested were from Missouri. The 10 defendants were each charged with more than one drug-related indictment, including:

• Continuing criminal enterprise
• Drug conspiracy
• Maintaining drug-involved premises
• Interstate travel to aid racketeering
• Possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute
• Possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime
• Possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute

Drug trafficking across state lines

The leaders in California reportedly had sources in Mexico supply their group with methamphetamines. Drivers would transport it from Mexico to California and then to Oklahoma and Missouri. They are accused of sending between 50 and 100 pounds of methamphetamine through mail or delivered in trucks. The defendants in Missouri and Oklahoma reportedly sent up to $100,000 to California for the drugs.

The federal drug ring case involves many investigating agencies and several states. According to reports, there’s a connection to a Grove, Oklahoma, storage unit case from 2020 where a large quantity of cash and methamphetamines was found.

Drug charges are always a serious issue. When the charges are prosecuted at the federal level, the potential penalties increase, so it’s important for defendants to have a strategy for fighting the charges or negotiating for a reduced sentence.
