Help your kids understand the consequences of college drinking

It’s that time of year again. Back-to-school, but instead of sending your children to high school, they’re on their way to college. This is an exciting time of year for parents and students alike, but it can also be nerve-wracking, especially for parents who are worried about the safety of children who are just venturing into the adult world. At The Law Offices of Dee Wampler & Joseph S. Passanise, we understand your concern, as we are aware of the pressures and stresses that Missouri college students face surrounding alcohol and social activities.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism warns that college drinking is a problem for a large number of students. Binge drinking is a particular issue with university life, as heavy drinking is often encouraged at parties, sporting events and weekend outings. The first six weeks of school are a vulnerable time for new students, many of whom develop drinking problems during this window, due to adjusting to their workload and social pressures. You may also be concerned to learn that every year, about 1,825 college students lose their lives in alcohol-related incidents, especially drunk driving crashes.

How do you prepare your children for the risks and help them make wise choices? You can start by discussing the above facts with them and letting them know that they can come to you at any time to discuss a problem they’re having. Throughout the year, you might watch for signs of substance abuse, including falling grades, depression, mood changes and withdrawal.

As our page on DWI charges explains, you are entitled to seek a competent defense if your child is facing alcohol-related charges.
