In today’s ever increasingly dangerous world, it is important to not only know how to protect yourself as a woman, but ways to ensure that even when you are out and about alone, you are taking the best safety precautions that get you to and from your destination unharmed.

From years of reviewing thousands of criminal cases, I suggest the following precautions women can take to reduce the risk of becoming a victim to crime.

1. Avoid walking alone. Statistics show that there is some truth to the adage, there is safety in numbers. If you can, always try to walk with one or more person, especially late at night.
2. Walk confidently, directly, and at a steady pace – do not appear afraid or lost. There are predators who look for individuals who portray this type of behavior when out and about.
3. Avoid walking at night. If you must, stay in a well-lighted area. Stick to well-traveled streets. Avoid shortcuts through isolated areas.
4. Do not wear shoes or clothing that restrict your movements. Restrictive shoes or clothing may prevent an individual from quickly fleeing a dangerous situation.
5. Do not show money or other items like expensive jewelry or clothing.
6. Carry your purse close to your body. Put your wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket.
7. If you believe someone is following you, switch direction or cross the street. Walk toward an open store or lighted house. If you can, use your cell phone to dial emergency services and let them know you suspect you are being followed.
8. Never accept rides from strangers.
9. Be careful when giving directions to pedestrians or motorists. Keep a safe distance to avoid getting grabbed or dragged into an automobile.
